The 39 STEPS is a brilliant title and must, in part, be responsible for the book’s enduring appeal. Intriguing, mysterious and, with the passage of time, evocative - it has never been out of print.
John Buchan’s original novel of an innocent man caught up in murder and international espionage, if truth be told, is peppered with unlikely coincidences and bizarre loopholes. Alfred Hitchcock’s film took the novel’s basic premise, dispensed with its political overtones and added the critical ingredient the book lacked - a woman! Perfectly cast and laced with wit and romance, it is a delightful and timeless confection.
This parody has grown out of an abiding affection for, and remains true to, the spirit of both.
